What can economics as a public service learn from past approaches?

Replacing ‘science’ for ‘Economic’ using CTRL Find and Replace

The challenge

I needed to find a way to stimulate discussion of the future of services for access to economics in the UK with academics and policymakers.

My response

To do so, I created a series of provocations, using artefacts to stimulate discussion of different future scenarios for the accessibility of Economics in the UK. I sketched some possible approaches and big visions, creating some example stimulus to provoke discussion.

I used this stimulus to gain feedback from academics and policymakers in the context of a funding call for interdisciplinary approaches to economic policymaking.

Approach 1: Public domain discipline

Stimulus question: What can economics learn from science communication?

Future artefact: An Economics and Society committee proceeding from the House of Lords

Approach 2: Skills strategy

Stimulus question: Is public understanding of economics a 21st century skils deficit?

Future artefact: An Economics digital inclusion scale

Approach 3: Changing the social contract

Stimulus question: What is the role of the economist in society?

Future artefact: A UX of the economy feedback app
